Composite Doors vs uPVC Doors — Which Is Better for a Bristol Home?
Both are excellent, practical choices. Here's an honest comparison to help you decide which makes more sense for your budget and property.
At a glance
| uPVC Door | Composite Door | |
|---|---|---|
| Starting price (+ VAT) | From £1,300 | From £1,800 |
| Appearance | Clean, modern | Timber-look, premium |
| Security | Good | Excellent |
| Thermal performance | Good | Excellent |
| Maintenance | Very low | Very low |
| Lifespan | 20–25 years | 30–35 years |
The honest summary: if budget is your primary concern, a quality uPVC door will serve you well for 20+ years with minimal upkeep. If you want the best possible security, thermal performance, and a door that looks and feels premium, a composite door is worth the extra investment.
What is a composite door?
A composite door is built from multiple materials — typically a solid timber core, a glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) outer skin, a uPVC frame, and a foam-filled interior. This construction gives it several advantages over a single-material door:
- The timber core makes it much heavier and more rigid than a hollow uPVC door — it feels solid when you close it
- The GRP skin can be textured and painted to look almost identical to a real timber door — without any of the maintenance
- The foam-filled interior gives it better thermal insulation than a standard uPVC door
- The multi-point locking systems fitted to composite doors typically meet higher security standards (PAS 24 certified as standard on most reputable makes)
What is a uPVC door?
A uPVC door has a uPVC frame with a reinforced steel core inside the frame sections, and a uPVC door slab. Modern uPVC doors are a long way from the thin, basic doors of the 1990s — they come with multi-point locking as standard, a good range of glass and colour options, and typically last 20–25 years.
The main limitation is that uPVC doors can feel lighter and less substantial than composite doors, and the range of styles and finishes is narrower.
Which is better for security?
Both are secure when properly installed with multi-point locking. However, composite doors have an edge:
- The solid timber core makes them significantly harder to kick in
- PAS 24 certification (the standard tested against intruder attack) is standard on most composite doors — less universal on entry-level uPVC
- For a front door in a city like Bristol, the extra security of a composite is worth considering
Which looks better?
This is subjective, but composite doors generally have the visual edge — especially if you want a timber-effect finish. The GRP skin holds colour well and doesn't fade or warp as timber would. uPVC doors have improved significantly in appearance, but the range of textures and finishes is still narrower.
If you have a period property, a Victorian terrace, or any home where a quality front door matters visually, composite is the obvious choice. For rear doors, utility access, or properties where budget matters more than aesthetics, uPVC is perfectly respectable.
What about maintenance?
Both uPVC and composite doors are very low maintenance compared to timber — no painting, no varnishing, no swelling in damp weather. A wipe-down with warm soapy water once or twice a year is all either needs. Composite doors don't fade or discolour noticeably over time.
Which should you choose?
Choose a composite door if:
- It's your front door, visible from the street
- You want the best security available
- You want a timber look without timber maintenance
- You plan to stay in the property for many years
Choose a uPVC door if:
- Budget is the primary concern
- It's a rear or side door where appearance matters less
- You're replacing multiple doors at once and want to keep costs down
- You want a reliable, low-maintenance door that will last 20+ years
