What causes window handles to fail?

Window handles operate a small gearbox inside the sash that drives the locking points. After years of daily use the internal springs and gears wear out. The handle starts to feel loose or stiff, then eventually stops operating the lock — or snaps off entirely. Corrosion can also seize the mechanism, particularly in kitchens and bathrooms where there's more moisture.

How we replace a faulty window handle

• Identify the handle type — spindle length, fixing centres, and gearbox style vary between manufacturers
• Remove the faulty handle or gearbox where needed — accessed from inside, with no glass removal needed in normal cases
• Fit matching replacement and test — check handle action, locking, and opening all work correctly

Many handle replacements can be completed during the same visit.

Is it definitely the handle?

Sometimes a handle problem is actually a symptom of a deeper issue. If the handle turns but the locking points won't engage, the fault may be the espagnolette locking mechanism rather than the handle itself. We'll diagnose the real cause before quoting — you won't pay for a handle replacement if the actual problem is elsewhere.

  £120 + VAT for the first handle, then £60 for each additional handle on the same visit.

• The handle spins without doing anything — what has failed?

  Usually the spindle or the internal gearing in the handle itself. Occasionally it is the locking mechanism the handle drives rather than the handle. We check both before quoting.

• Can I just buy a handle and fit it myself?

  You can, but handles vary by spindle length, backset and handing, and the wrong one will not work or will not lock properly. If you would rather do it yourself, send us a photo and we will tell you what to look for.

• My handle turns but the window will not lock — is that still the handle?

  Not necessarily. If the handle moves freely but nothing engages, the locking mechanism may be at fault instead. That is a different repair, from £165 + VAT.
