Privacy glass for any overlooked room

Obscure glass — also called privacy, patterned, or frosted glass — lets light into a room while stopping people seeing in. It's the standard choice for bathrooms, toilets, en-suites, front-door side panels, and any window overlooked by a neighbour or the street. We replace the sealed glass unit while leaving your existing frame and window in place.

Where obscure glass is used

  • Bathrooms and toilets — the most common use, for privacy without losing daylight
  • Front doors and side panels — privacy at the entrance, toughened as standard
  • Overlooked windows — ground-floor or close-neighbour windows where you want light but not sightlines
  • Stairwells and landings — light without a clear view in
  • Existing misted privacy units — replace a failed obscure unit like-for-like

Privacy levels and patterns

Obscure glass comes in a range of privacy levels, from a light texture you can still see shapes through up to a heavy pattern that's almost opaque. There's also a choice of patterns — from a smooth frosted finish to textured designs. We'll help you choose a level and style that suits the room: a bathroom usually wants maximum privacy, while a hallway might only need a light obscure. Send us a photo and tell us the room, and we'll recommend a suitable option.

Toughened where it's required.
Obscure glass in doors, door side panels, and low-level windows must be toughened safety glass by law. We supply it toughened as standard in those positions — it's never an optional extra. See door glass replacement.

What does it cost?

Obscure glass is fitted the same way as any sealed-unit replacement, with the frame staying in place. Prices start from £165 + VAT for a standard unit. Patterned and toughened units can cost a little more, and the exact price depends on the size, the pattern, and whether toughened glass is required — we confirm it after checking the size and pattern, before ordering anything.

Frequently asked questions

  • They're different words for much the same thing — glass you can't see clearly through. 'Obscure' and 'privacy' are the general terms; 'frosted' is the smooth, sandblasted look; 'patterned' glass has a texture moulded into it. They all provide privacy while still letting light through.

  • Yes. In most cases we replace the sealed unit only — the frame stays in place. We measure the existing unit, make a new obscure unit to size, and fit it. It's the same job as a misted-glass swap, just with privacy glass instead of clear.

  • Yes, and it's required there. Glass in doors, side panels and low-level windows must be toughened safety glass — we supply obscure glass toughened as standard in those positions.

  • Obscure glass comes in different privacy levels, from lightly textured to almost completely opaque. We'll help you pick a level that suits the room — bathrooms and overlooked windows usually want a higher privacy level than a hallway.
