What type of glass problem do you have?

Most glass problems are solved by replacing the sealed unit — not the whole window or door. Choose the issue that matches yours for a detailed explanation and pricing.

Specialist glass we supply & fit

More than standard sealed units — we also supply and fit specialist glass for doors and windows across Bristol. Toughened and laminated safety glass are fitted as standard wherever they're required.

What's wrong with your glass and what's usually needed

Most glass problems are solved by replacing the sealed unit, not the whole window or door. Here's what the common issues usually mean and the best next step. These are general guides — send us a few photos and we'll confirm what's needed before anything is ordered.

What you've noticedWhat it usually meansWhat's usually needed
Condensation or misting between the panes The sealed unit's seal has failed and moisture is trapped inside — it won't clear, and the proper fix is replacement, not resealing. The sealed unit can normally be replaced while the frame stays — see misted double glazing.
Cracked double-glazed unit A crack in either pane usually means the sealed unit needs replacing, though the frame is normally fine. We replace the unit to the correct specification — see misted or failed double glazing.
Smashed or broken window glass Impact or stress damage. Where security or weather is a concern, this is treated as a priority. Send photos and we'll advise on next steps, including a temporary board if needed — see smashed glass repair.
Broken door glass Door panels can normally be replaced on their own, with toughened safety glass fitted as standard. See door glass replacement.
Bathroom or privacy glass needed Obscure glass comes in different patterns and privacy levels to suit the room. We'll help you choose the right one — see obscure & privacy glass.
Worried you might need a whole new window In most cases only the sealed unit needs replacing — the frame is usually sound and can stay. Replacing the glass alone is normally far less involved than a new window. Send us a photo and we'll tell you honestly.

Still not sure? Send us a few photos and we'll tell you what's likely needed and give you a clear price before anything is ordered.

Glass Replacement Services in Bristol

Most customers who contact us about a glass problem don't need a new window — they need a new sealed unit. The frame is usually in perfectly good condition, and replacing just the glass unit costs a fraction of a full window replacement.

We supply and fit all types of glass for Bristol homes. Getting the specification right matters — size, thickness, glass type, and whether toughened or safety glass is legally required. We handle all of that. Typical turnaround is around one week from measurement to fitting.

What we replace

  • Misted or blown double-glazed units — condensation between the panes means the seal has failed
  • Broken or cracked glass — accident damage, impact, or stress fractures
  • Toughened glass — legally required in all doors and some window positions
  • Single glazingtimber frame putty replacement
  • Conservatory glass — roof and panel units. Price provided on request — costs vary depending on glass type, size, and specification.
  • A-rated and energy efficient glass — upgrade to reduce heat loss
  • Acoustic / noise-reduction glass — higher-spec glazing for improved noise reduction
  • Laminated glass — enhanced security or noise reduction

Toughened glass for doors

Legal requirement: All door glass panels must use toughened safety glass. We always quote this as standard — no exceptions.

Why choose us for glass replacement?

  • Frame stays, glass replaced — saves you the cost of a full window
  • ~1 week turnaround from measurement to fitting
  • Correct spec every time — toughened glass for doors, safety glass where required
  • Price confirmed before ordering — no surprises

Why you almost never need a new window

The frame and the glass are separate components. When the sealed unit fails — misted, cracked, or broken — the frame itself is almost always fine. We remove the old unit and fit a new factory-made sealed unit in its place. The frame stays; only the glass changes.

The cost difference is significant: replacing just the sealed unit typically starts from around £165 + VAT, against roughly £600 + VAT for a whole new window (frame and glass). When the frame is sound there is no reason to replace it — repairing the glass alone saves you a great deal. We'll always tell you which option is appropriate (full pricing is below).

How quickly can it be done?

Glass units are manufactured to measure, so there's an order lead time — typically around one week from when we measure up. Once the unit arrives, fitting takes 30–60 minutes per pane. From your initial call to a clear, finished window, most jobs are completed within 7–10 days.

For broken glass where the window is open to the elements, we can sometimes arrange a boarded temporary solution while the unit is on order — call us to discuss.

Why has my double-glazed unit gone misty?

Misting between the panes means the hermetic seal has failed. Once the seal breaks, moisture gets between the panes and can't escape — causing the permanent cloudy or streaky appearance. The only solution is to replace the unit. The seal cannot be resealed, and the misting will not clear on its own.

Misting is most common in south-facing windows (more sun exposure means more thermal expansion) and in windows over 15–20 years old. It has no bearing on the frame condition — the frame is almost always reusable.

Glass in non-standard frames

We also handle glass replacement in older and non-standard frames:

Frequently Asked Questions

  • It means the seal on your double-glazed unit has failed. Moisture has got between the panes and is condensing. The fix is to replace the glass unit — not the whole window. The frame itself is usually fine. From £165 + VAT per unit.
  • No. In most cases you only need the sealed glass unit replaced. This is significantly cheaper than a full window replacement. If the frame is in good condition, a glass unit replacement is the right call.
  • Toughened safety glass is a legal requirement for all door glass panels, and for window panes within 300mm of a door or within 800mm of floor level. We always quote toughened glass for these positions — no exceptions.
  • We measure and order the glass unit first, which typically takes around one week. Fitting takes 30–60 minutes. Most glass replacements are completed within 7–10 days of your initial call.
