A downstairs cloakroom in BS9. The old glass was heavily textured with Georgian bars across it — plenty of privacy, but it made a small dark room darker. It came out for plain satin glass with the bars left off. Same privacy, considerably more light, and the frame was not touched.

A lot of bathroom and cloakroom windows around here still carry the textured pattern that was fitted with them — heavy reeded, flemish or bubbled glass, often with bars over it. It does the privacy job, but it dates a room and it cuts the light more than people expect in a space that usually has only one small window.
Modern satin glass is obscured right through rather than moulded on the surface, so it gives the same privacy with a smooth, even finish and lets more light through. It is a sealed unit swap — the frame, the hinges and the handle all stay put, and it is normally a single short visit.
