Serving Bishopsworth & Dundry
Bishopsworth sits at the south-west edge of Bristol, with Withywood and Highridge either side of it and Dundry on the hill above. The ground rises sharply here, and that shows up in the work — houses on the slope tend to have been built or extended to make the most of the view north over the city, which usually means large panes and patio doors rather than standard window openings.
Large glass is a different job from a standard sealed unit. It is heavier, it often has to be carried through the house rather than in from outside, and in a door it has to be safety glass. None of that makes it difficult, but it does mean it is worth using someone who does it regularly.
The rest of the work in BS13 is the ordinary run: misted units, hinges and handles worn out on windows fitted twenty-odd years ago, and doors that have dropped and stopped locking.

Recent work in Dundry

A patio door in Dundry. The glass broke on its own — nothing hit it, no one did anything to it. We taped it to hold it together and get it safe, then came back with a new unit. The frame and the sliding gear were fine and stayed exactly where they were.
Toughened glass really does break on its own
It sounds like an excuse, and most people assume somebody must have knocked it. They usually haven't. Toughened glass is under tension by design, and a tiny impurity sealed inside it during manufacture can slowly grow until the pane lets go — sometimes years after it was fitted, with nothing touching it. When it goes it crazes all over at once instead of cracking in a line, which is the giveaway.
There is nothing you could have done differently and nothing wrong with the rest of the door. Tape it if it is holding together, keep people away from it, and send us a photo — the frame almost always stays and it is the glass unit only.
What does it cost?
The same prices apply everywhere we work — nothing is loaded because of your postcode. Misted glass from £165 + VAT, window hinges from £145, handles from £120, window locking mechanisms from £165, door realignment £145. Large and toughened panes are quoted individually, because the size and the access change the job.
