Where single glazing repair applies
Single glazing is still found in many older Bristol properties — particularly Victorian and Edwardian homes, outbuildings, sheds, and some older doors. When a single pane breaks, it can be replaced on its own without changing the frame or upgrading the whole window.
Common situations where single glazing repair is needed:
- Broken pane in an older timber window
- Cracked glass in a traditional timber door
- Damaged glass in an outbuilding, garage, or shed window
- Replacement of a single pane where the rest of the window is fine
Single glazing vs double glazing
Single glazing is one pane of glass held in the frame with putty. Double glazing is a sealed unit of two panes with a gas-filled gap between them. Double glazing is much better for insulation and noise reduction, but single glazing is still appropriate where:
- The frame is designed for single glazing and can't accept a sealed unit
- It's a non-habitable space (shed, garage, outbuilding)
- You want to maintain the original character of an older property
If your timber frame has been adapted to accept double-glazed sealed units, we can supply and fit those too — see timber frame glass replacement.
Traditional putty glazing
For single-pane replacement in timber frames, we use traditional linseed oil putty — the same method used on the original glazing. The process is straightforward:
- Remove the broken glass and old putty carefully
- Clean and prepare the rebate
- Bed the new glass pane and secure with glazing sprigs
- Finish with a clean putty bevel and leave to cure
The putty takes a few weeks to fully harden and can then be painted to match the frame.
Pricing
Single glazing repair pricing depends on the pane size, glass type, and access. Send us photos of the broken pane and the frame and we'll give you a clear price.
When full replacement may make more sense
If the timber frame itself is badly rotten, warped, or failing, replacing just the glass may not be worthwhile. In those cases a full window replacement with modern uPVC or timber may be the better long-term option. We'll let you know honestly if that's the case.
For most situations where the frame is still serviceable, replacing the glass is the practical and cost-effective choice.
