Types of broken glass we replace
Impact damage — smashed or shattered
A ball, tool, or falling object can shatter a double-glazed unit completely. If both panes are broken the window is open to the elements and needs dealing with immediately. We can advise on temporary boarding while the replacement unit is on order.
Cracked or stress-fractured glass
Glass can crack without obvious impact — usually a stress fracture from a chip on the glass edge that has spread under thermal expansion. A cracked pane will eventually shatter, so it's worth replacing promptly rather than waiting.
One pane broken in a double-glazed unit
When one pane breaks but the other stays intact, the unit still needs replacing in full. A sealed unit can't be repaired with a single new pane — it's ordered and fitted as one piece.
How we fix it
- Measure: We visit to measure the opening precisely. In some cases we can give a rough price from a photo before visiting.
- Order: Sealed units are made to measure — typically 5–7 working days for standard sizes.
- Fit: We remove the broken unit, clear the frame, fit the new sealed unit, and refit the beading. Most fitting takes 30–60 minutes per pane.

What does it cost?
Replacing a broken sealed unit costs far less than a new window. The frame is almost always unaffected by impact damage to the glass — you're paying for the glass unit and fitting only.

Price is confirmed after measuring. Non-standard sizes or toughened units (required in some positions — always in doors) cost more, but the price is agreed before anything is ordered.
Does it need to be toughened glass?
Toughened safety glass is legally required for all door glass panels and for windows in certain positions (low-level, near door openings). We'll confirm whether toughened glass is needed when we measure up. For doors, it's always quoted as standard — no exceptions.
