Signs your window lock or mechanism needs attention
- The handle turns but the window won't lock — the key won't engage or the lock point doesn't shoot
- The handle has become stiff and hard to turn
- The handle has snapped off or dropped off entirely
- The key turns but nothing happens — the lock doesn't operate
- The window closes but won't latch securely, even with the key
- You can see the espagnolette strip (the locking bar running up the edge of the window) is visibly bent or broken
What causes window locks to fail?
Worn handle and gearbox
The handle on a uPVC casement window operates a small gearbox that drives the locking points into the frame. After years of use the internal mechanism wears out — the handle starts to feel loose or stiff, then eventually stops operating the lock altogether. This is one of the most common window repairs we carry out.
Broken espagnolette mechanism
Many uPVC windows use an espagnolette — a long strip that runs around the sash and carries multiple lock points. When the handle is turned, the strip moves and drives hooks or shootbolts into the frame at several positions. If this mechanism breaks or distorts, the window may close but the lock points won't engage. A full espagnolette replacement is more involved than a handle swap but is still a repair rather than a window replacement.
How we repair window locks
We examine the handle, gearbox, and lock strip to find the exact fault. The locking mechanism is accessed from the edge of the window sash — there is no need to remove the glass. In most cases the repair is one of the following:
- Handle and gearbox replacement: Remove the old handle, fit a matching replacement, test the full locking action. Most common repair — done in under an hour.
- Espagnolette mechanism replacement: Remove and replace the full lock strip, refit and test all lock points. Takes longer but avoids the need to replace the whole window.
We carry the most common handle and gearbox types with us, so most jobs are completed in a single visit without ordering parts in advance.
- The window won't lock at all — a security issue
- The handle has snapped off and you can't close or lock the window
- The key turns but nothing engages — you're not sure if the window is secure
- The lock has been gradually getting stiffer over time
What does it cost?
Handle and gearbox replacements are £120 + VAT — the most common window lock repair. Full locking mechanism (espagnolette) replacements are more involved at £165 + VAT, but still far cheaper than a new window.
| Job | Price (+ VAT) |
|---|---|
| Handle and gearbox replacement | £120 |
| Locking mechanism (espagnolette) replacement | £165 |
| Additional locking mechanism (same visit) | £115 |
If we carry out multiple repairs on the same visit, additional items are usually cheaper.
We agree the price before starting any work. We'll tell you which repair applies after inspecting the window — there are no hidden charges.
When you might need a new window instead
Lock and mechanism repairs are almost always the right solution. A full window replacement only makes sense if:
- The uPVC frame itself has cracked or deformed around the lock housing
- The window is very old and multiple parts are failing at the same time
- You want to upgrade to a higher-spec window anyway
We'll give you an honest assessment. If the lock mechanism is the only problem, we repair it.
