Misted or blown panels

A permanently cloudy, streaky, or foggy panel means the sealed unit has failed and moisture has got between the panes. It won't clear up on its own and it can't be dried out — the fix is a new sealed unit. Conservatories often show this first in the roof, because those panels take the most weather and the biggest temperature swings.

Cracked or broken panels

Storm damage, a falling branch, or thermal stress can crack a conservatory panel. A cracked roof panel matters more than a cracked window — it's overhead glass, so it needs dealing with rather than leaving. Send us a photo and we'll tell you what's involved.

Too hot in summer, too cold in winter

This is the most common complaint about conservatories, and it is usually the glass rather than the room. If your roof panels are old, they may be plain glass with no coating at all. Modern replacements can include a solar control coating to cut heat build-up, or a Low-E coating to hold warmth in during winter. That is a genuine upgrade rather than a like-for-like swap, so tell us if that is what you are after and we will quote accordingly.

Leaks around the glass

Water coming in near a panel is not always the glass itself — it can be the capping, gaskets, or seals around it. It's worth us seeing a photo before assuming the panel needs replacing, because sometimes it doesn't.

Roof panels and side panels are different jobs

Side and window panels are much like any other sealed unit. They sit at a normal working height, they're straightforward to measure, and they're usually replaced in a single visit once the glass arrives.

Roof panels are overhead glazing. They need the appropriate safety glass rather than whatever happens to be cheapest, they're heavier and more awkward to handle, and the price depends partly on getting safe access to that part of the roof. Some conservatories are easy; some sit over a flat roof or a difficult drop and need more thought. That's why we'd rather see a photo of the whole conservatory than just the damaged panel, and why roof work is priced separately — see below.

What does it cost?

Side panels and roof panels are priced very differently, because they are genuinely different jobs. Be wary of anyone quoting a single figure for both.

Roof glass is a specialist job. The unit itself is larger and heavier, it has to be the right glass for overhead glazing, and getting it safely into position is a significant part of the work — which is why it starts around £800 supplied and fitted rather than in the low hundreds.

Where a panel sits, how big it is, and what specification of glass it needs all move the price. Solar control or Low-E upgrades are quoted separately, because they're an improvement on what you had rather than a like-for-like replacement. We agree the price with you before anything is ordered.

For comparison, a standard window sealed unit starts from £165 + VAT and door glass from £250 + VAT.

Do I need a whole new conservatory?

Almost never, and certainly not because of one failed panel. If the frames, capping and structure are sound, replacing the glass gives you a clear, sealed, properly performing conservatory for a small fraction of the cost of rebuilding it.

Replacing several panels at once is usually better value per panel than doing them one at a time, since it's a single visit. If two or three have gone, it's worth asking about all of them together.
