What are patio doors?
Patio doors — also called sliding doors — have two or more large glazed panels where one slides behind the other to open. They're the right choice when you want a wide, bright garden opening but don't have room for doors that swing outwards.
Modern uPVC patio doors run on smooth inline tracks and are far easier to operate than the older aluminium sliders they often replace. They're also significantly more energy efficient and secure. If you have room for outward-swinging doors, French doors give you a wider opening.
Why choose patio doors?
- Space-saving — slides sideways, nothing swings into the room or garden
- Maximum light — large glass panels from floor to near-ceiling
- Easy to use — smooth inline tracks, no lifting or pulling
- Secure — multi-point hook locks engage into the frame
- Low threshold option — step-free garden access available
- Flexible sizing — 2-pane, 3-pane, and 4-pane configurations
Patio doors vs French doors
- Patio doors — slide sideways, half the opening is usable at a time, no outward swing needed
- French doors — swing outwards, full opening when both doors are open, but need clear space outside
Patio doors are often the better choice when you have decking, a covered patio, or limited outdoor clearance. French doors suit wider openings where you want to remove the barrier between inside and out completely.
What does it cost?
Patio door prices depend on the width and number of panels. As a rough guide:
| Configuration | Typical price (+ VAT) |
|---|---|
| 2-pane sliding patio doors | From £1,800 |
| 3-pane sliding patio doors | From £2,500 |

All glass in doors must be toughened safety glass by law. We quote this as standard — it's never an optional extra.
Replacing old aluminium patio doors
If your home has the older aluminium sliders from the 1980s or 1990s, they're almost certainly single-glazed, draughty, and heavy to slide. New uPVC patio doors fit into the same opening and the difference in energy efficiency, security, and ease of use is immediate.
