Common door problems and what they usually mean
Not sure which repair you need? Here are the door faults we're asked about most, what they usually point to, and the best next step. These are general guides — the only way to be sure is to take a look, so send us a few photos and we'll tell you what's likely going on before any work is agreed.
| Problem you notice | What it usually means | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Door only locks when you lift the handle | The door has often dropped slightly on its hinges, so the locking points no longer line up with the keeps until you lift it. | This can normally be put right with a hinge adjustment and realignment. |
| Door catches or rubs on the frame | Usually a sign the door has dropped or the hinges have worn, taking it out of alignment. | Often fixed by adjusting or realigning the door. |
| Handle feels floppy, stiff, or spins | Often a worn handle, or a fault in the multipoint locking mechanism behind it. | Usually a handle or mechanism repair. |
| Key turns but the door won't unlock | The cylinder or the locking mechanism may have worn or failed — in many cases it's the gearbox inside the door. | Best looked at quickly, as your security may be affected — see door lock repair. |
| Draught around the door | Often a dropped door or perished weather seals letting air past — common on French doors where the two leaves meet. | Usually resolved by realignment and/or new seals — see French door repair or door adjustment. |
| Sliding patio door stiff, dragging, or off its track | Often worn rollers, a dirty or damaged track, or the door dropped out of alignment. | Some of this is adjustable; worn running gear can be a specialist job — we'll advise honestly. See patio door repair. |
| Bifold doors not folding or closing smoothly | Can be a dropped panel or alignment, though worn tracks and rollers are often a specialist job. | We can advise on alignment, and we replace bifold locks, handles and glass. Worn tracks, rollers and running gear may need a bifold specialist — see bifold door repair. |
| Cracked or broken door glass | The glass panel can normally be replaced on its own — the door itself usually stays. | We fit toughened safety glass as standard — see door glass replacement. |
Still not sure? Send us a few photos and we'll tell you what's likely involved and give you a clear price before any work starts.

Door repair pricing
Our minimum charge for any door repair is £120 + VAT. Most common door repairs — handles, locks, realignment — have a fixed price that we agree with you before any work starts.
If we carry out multiple repairs on the same visit, additional items are usually cheaper. We'll always give you a clear total before we begin.
My door won't close — what's wrong with it?
A door that won't close flush has usually dropped on its hinges. Over time the hinges wear, the door settles a few millimetres, and it starts catching on the frame or threshold. The fix is a hinge adjustment or realignment — usually done in under an hour.
If the door closes but won't lock, the fault is usually the multipoint locking mechanism or the keep (the metal plate on the frame that the lock hooks engage). This is a parts repair, not a replacement job.
If your door glass is misted or broken, the glass panel can be replaced without changing the door itself.
In all three cases, repair is almost always the right answer. We only recommend a new door when the frame or slab itself has failed and repair no longer makes financial sense.
We also repair aluminium doors — handles, hinges, locks, and glass.
