Window Hinge Repair in Bristol
Window dropping, catching on the frame, or not closing properly? These are usually hinge faults — worn friction stays that can't hold the sash in position. A straightforward repair, usually done in a single visit.

Signs your window hinge needs attention
- The window closes on its own when you let go — especially in a breeze
- The window is stiff and hard to open fully
- There's a grinding or scraping noise when you open or close it
- The window drops or sags when open
- The window sits slightly crooked in the frame when closed
- You can see the hinge is visibly bent, cracked, or corroded
What causes window hinges to fail?
uPVC window hinges have a friction mechanism that holds the window at whatever angle you open it to. Over time — typically after 10–15 years of regular use — this friction wears out. The hinge can no longer hold the weight of the window open, so it falls shut. In other cases the hinge itself physically breaks, usually from metal fatigue or from the window being forced beyond its designed opening angle.
Casement windows (the most common type in Bristol homes) use either standard friction stays or egress hinges. Both types are standard parts that we carry with us, so we can replace them in a single visit without ordering anything in advance.
How we repair window hinges
We'll visit, open the window and examine the hinge to diagnose the exact fault. In most cases this is one of two things:
- Friction adjustment: If the hinge mechanism still has some life in it, adjusting the friction screw may restore enough hold to keep the window open. This takes a few minutes and costs nothing extra if we're already on site.
- Hinge replacement: If the hinge is worn out or broken, we replace it with a matching part. We carry a wide range of common uPVC hinges, so most replacements are done in under an hour with no return visit for parts.
Once the new hinge is fitted we'll test the window fully — opening, holding position, and closing — and adjust as needed so it operates correctly.
- The window falls shut and can't be propped open safely
- A bedroom or bathroom window won't stay open for ventilation
- The window is open and you can't close it
- You're not sure what's wrong — call and describe the symptoms
What does it cost?
Window hinge replacement is £145 + VAT per window.
| Job | Price (+ VAT) |
|---|---|
| Window hinge replacement (first window) | £145 |
| Additional window (same visit) | £95 |
Prices are confirmed before any work starts. We'll give you a clear price after inspecting the hinge — there are no hidden charges.
When you might need a new window instead
Hinge repair is almost always the right solution. The only times a full window replacement makes more sense are:
- The uPVC frame around the hinge has cracked or the hinge recess has failed structurally
- The window is very old and multiple parts are failing at the same time
- You want to upgrade to a higher-spec window at the same time
We'll tell you honestly which option makes sense. If the hinge is the only problem and the frame is sound, we repair it.
