What's wrong with your composite door?

Here's what the usual faults can mean and what to do next.

Problem you noticeWhat it can meanWhat to do next
Composite door dropped, sticking or catching on the frame Usually the hinges have worn and the door is out of line with the frame. A realignment, or new hinges with realignment included if necessary — see the prices above and door adjustment.
Hard to lock, or only locks if you lift the handle The door has often dropped slightly, so the locking points no longer line up. Usually a realignment — see door adjustment.
Key turns but the door won't lock or unlock Several possible causes: the cylinder, the gearbox, the lock, or the door has dropped. Send photos first and we'll give you a rough price — see door lock repair.
Handle loose, floppy or broken A worn handle, or a fault in the lock behind it. We'll check whether it's the handle or the gearbox behind it — see the prices above and door lock repair.
Glass cracked, or the cassette around it broken The glass or its cassette can be replaced; the door stays. Send us a photo for a price — see composite door glass below.
Water getting in around your composite door Leaks are often hard to pin down. See the leak question below.

Repair or a new composite door?

Most composite door problems are in the moving parts — hinges, locks, handles. Those we fix. But some problems are in the door itself, and no repair will put them right.

A new door is the answer if:

  • The door is swollen or warped.
  • The door skin is cracked or damaged.

Only sticks on hot days? That's usually a realignment. See door adjustment.

Our new composite front doors are a fixed £1,800 + VAT (£2,160 inc VAT): any colour, any glass, any handle, with survey, fitting and taking the old door away included. See composite doors →

So you're not left waiting on a quote: we don't repair scratches or faded colour, and we don't fit cat flaps in composite doors.

Composite door glass, cassettes and letterboxes

We replace cracked or broken glass in composite doors, and the cassette (the frame that holds the glass in the door). Send us a photo and we'll give you a price.

We also replace letterboxes on composite doors. A new letterbox starts at £145 + VAT (£174 inc VAT).

For how door glass replacement works, see door glass replacement.

Composite door repair questions

  • We can get it open. It usually means cutting through the old lock, so a new lock and strip is always needed — £290 + VAT (£348 inc VAT), plus £95 + VAT (£114 inc VAT) for opening the door. Just call us on 07400 466844.

  • Composite door repairs start at £145 + VAT (£174 inc VAT). Every repair price is in the table above.

  • We repair dropped doors, hinges, locks, handles and glass. A swollen, warped or cracked door needs a new one — see “Repair or a new composite door?” above.

  • We'll be straight with you: leaks are hard to trace without taking the door out, so any fix is our best guess and we can't guarantee it. If it's around the glass, we can reseal it — that's our minimum £145 + VAT (£174 inc VAT). If we need to come and look first, an inspection visit is £95 + VAT (£114 inc VAT), taken off your bill if you go ahead within 30 days.

  • Send us photos and we'll tell you what it needs. If the door itself is cracked or split, it needs a new door.
