How Much Does Door Repair Cost in Bristol?

Door repair prices vary depending on what's wrong — but most common problems are straightforward jobs that don't require a new door. Here's an honest guide to what things actually cost.

Most door repairs start from £120 + VAT

The majority of door problems — a handle that won't turn, a hinge that's dropped, a lock that sticks — are repair jobs, not replacement jobs. In most cases the door itself is fine; it's the hardware or the alignment that needs attention.

We use fixed pricing for predictable jobs. If the job is more complex (for example, a multipoint locking mechanism that needs a full replacement), we'll quote you before starting work.

What causes doors to drop or stick?

The most common reason a uPVC or composite door drops, drags, or becomes difficult to close is hinge wear. The hinges on a front door take the full weight of the door every single time it's opened — over years, this causes them to work loose or wear down. The door then sits slightly lower in the frame, causing it to catch on the threshold or resist closing.

The other common cause is the building settling slightly over time, which shifts the door frame out of true. In this case, the door itself is fine — it just needs adjusting or the hinges shimmed to compensate.

My door has a broken multipoint lock — is it worth repairing?

Almost always yes. A broken multipoint locking mechanism sounds serious, but it's a standard repair. The mechanism itself is a replaceable part — we carry a wide range of common mechanisms and can usually replace one in a single visit. The cost is £350 + VAT for a full multipoint mechanism replacement, which is a fraction of a new door.

The only time we'd suggest replacing the door rather than the lock is if the door itself has significant damage, if the frame has failed, or if the door is original single-glazed and you'd rather upgrade to something with modern security and insulation at the same time.

When does a door need replacing rather than repairing?

Repair is almost always the right call for hardware problems. The cases where replacement makes more sense are:

  • The door frame itself has rotted, cracked, or warped significantly
  • The door is original single-glazed and you want to improve insulation and security
  • Multiple things are going wrong at once and the door is over 20 years old
  • You want to upgrade — for example, from a plain uPVC door to a composite front door

We'll always tell you honestly which option makes sense. If your door can be repaired, we'll repair it — we're not going to push you towards a replacement you don't need.
